The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
Topic #1- Ensuring International Oversight and Curtailing Nuclear Proliferation in Iran and the DPRK
Jordan is in support of coming together to curtail nuclear proliferation in both Iran and the DPRK. This conflict must be settled in a quick and resounding manner so that there may be safety in the world. If we fail to make a resolution, not only will both countries suffer, but the rest of the world may also.
Jordan is a non-nuclear weapon state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. In 1998, Jordan was the first country in the Middle East to adopt the Additional Protocol to its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, which allows the International Atomic Energy Agency extra inspection privileges. We hope this experience helps us provide a conclusive and peaceable solution.
We call for India and Pakistan to sign and follow the rules of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. These two countries have strong ties to Iran and need to set an example for Iran. If Iran’s allies do not sign this agreement, why should Iran be forced to follow guidelines it does not want to follow. The same is also for Syria, one of the DPRK’s closest allies. Syria has not signed and neither has the DPRK, Syria also has to set an example for them.
In summary, Jordan will help guide the committee towards a peaceful resolution that benefits all countries involved. Furthermore, it is dire that larger nations do their fair share to deescalate the situation.
